Company eyes biomass plant in Negros Occidental

A power company is interested in building a biomass power plant in Negros Occidental, a move welcomed by Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. amid the province’s worsening power shortage.

Marañon said a biomass power plant is a green solution to the power shortage, especially since some sectors are opposed to building a coal-fired power plant in the province.

The governor said that officials of Global Green Power Corp., PLC have informed him that they were interested in building a biomass power plant producing environmentally sound and renewable energy with the use of agricultural waste.

GGPC is a Philippine corporation registered with the Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission. GGP of the United Kingdom currently owns 40 percent of GGPC with 60 percent owned by its Filipino partners.

The governor said that based on the proposal he received Friday from the company through GGPC director Grace Yenesa, GGPC’s proposed plant for Negros Occidental will use waste from sugarcane, corn and rice as fuel.

The plant, which can be completed in 24 months, will initially produce 35 megawatts and if successful can be expanded by another 35 mw, the governor added.

The company is in fact currently in the process of building a 17.5-mw biomass power plant in Mina, Iloilo.

Marañon said the biomass power plant was his preferred power source, but he was not ruling out the need for a coal-fired power plant, too, to meet the needs of Negros Occidental.

“(But) we will try to stay green if we can,” he said.

Marañon pointed out that even if Negros Occidental increased its power supply by 70 mw in three years, it will still not be enough because the province has one of the fastest growth rates in power consumption.
